i want to start with something that newt gingrich said this morning on "morning joe." mark, let me play that. >> everybody i talk to agrees he's had two and a half very tough weeks, and i do agree. i think they started with the clinton speech, and then they got compoundeded by all the ot stuff that happened. the person in the cross hairs in the next ten days is mitt romney. >> let me ask you about your thought of where the campaign is right now, and if he's in the cross hairs feeling the heat, is he the kind of guy that stomach bems and withers, or is he the candidate to take that as i'm hitting rock bottom and i'm going to start to climb up? >> well, i mean, mitt romney has shown a lot of resolve through the primaries, and he bounced back from a lot of bad periods. i remember well in september of 2000 we called it black september and we were down 3 to 5 points. it wasn't until the dethe baits we turned things around. there's opportunity here for sure, but what the romney campaign has to do, which is sort of what charles krauthhammer is saying is start to talk about po

jonathan kapart, and chris cofinus and jackie gingrich kushman, author and daughter of newt gingrich and former adviser to her father's presidential campaign. welcome to the throuee of you. five days is all mitt romney has before the debate. the politico article everybody is talking about today say this isn't the chair or ho hum convention or the leaked video or distorted polls or the message or mormonism. it's mitt. does he have enough time for a real game change? >> you know, five days before the first debate, 40 days before election day people go around the country already are starting to vote early voting in a bunch of states across the country. it's unclear whether there's enough time. as that politico story points out and as i've been writing a couple of times now, mitt romney has a personal problem, and that is he's too much into micromanaging his own campaigns. as peggy noonan says, his campaign needs a ceo. he needs to be the candidates. he needs to kiss babies, shake hands and do rallies and get on the plane and get to as many rallies he can in addition to adding specifics

during the primaries when romney needed to deliver a big knockout punch to newt gingrich and to rick perry, he managed to do it, and he did it very aggressively. so he knows what he's doing up there. obama needs to be on his toes. you know, i just think he can anticipate most of what romney is going to say, but he needs to have a few zingers of his own to make sure he gets his share of sound bites in the newscasts that follow. >> based on previous debate performances, how would you characterize governor romney's style versus the president's style? >> romney is good on the attack, i think. as i just indicated, i mean, when he needed to flash the knife against rick perry in that one debate i'm particularly thinking of, he really did it. he's good at that, and he's not going to back down. you know, a lot of this also comes down to interpersonal dynamics and how they play off each other and what their body chemistry says and so on and so forth. romney was pretty aggressive in a lot of republican debates, interrupting people, leaning forward, that sort of thing. don't think you can do tha

but just this morning on "morning joe," newt gingrich, who debated him many, many times, said that he got clobbered by him, that mitt romney, when he had to down in florida, literally turned things around, everybody saw that and knows that. mitt romney debated -- tim pawlenty said he's as good as a debater as there is, i'm telling you that because i debated him all the time. these are guys that ran against him. the fact is that mitt romney is very good debater. he's done a very good job. he's practiced and practiced and practiced and he's been flying around with, you know, the person playing obama on his airplane every minute. he's gone away and done five debates in 48 hours up in new hampshire or vermont or somewhere. this is the biggest deal in the world to him. he's been really getting ready for it and as we know from my experience with president bush, that debate can mean a lot. i went up eight to ten points after that debate, so mitt romney has a lot more going for him here. the president on the other hand, has to be president every day. just gave two speeches i thought terrific

when he went toe to toe with newt gingrich in florida in a debate, that was a very strong performance but he stumbles with the 47%. and republicans just don't think that he can be consistent over this month plus. >> bill: so it leaves up to -- well, the debates. right? now, i want to get your take on this. to point out that this idea that the debate is going to turn things around, that's the same thing they said about his choice of a vice presidential running mate right. that was going to catapult him into the lead. then they said wait until tampa. the republican -- catapult him. now they're saying wait until next wednesday's debate. >> i think it is going to be tough. ryan helped him a little bit in the beginning. conservatives rallied around it. there has been a disappointment there hasn't been a bold choice. this is tough for romney. romney needs to go deep now. he's down. it is fourth quarter. he's down. but then if you start attacking relentlessly, then you look desperate. so the first debate is big. but remember, john kerry won the first debate against bush. >> bill: i find that
